Tips For Picking the Right DJ

How many times have you hired a Professional Disc Jockey? Chances are pretty good if you're viewing this page, you've never hired one. If you pull open the local Yellow pages I'm sure you'll find 25-50 companies listed.

Once you start to call these companies, It can be very tempting to select a DJ who has the lowest price. You should know upfront that not all Professional Disc Jockeys are created equally, and you should never make any selection based on the LOWEST price you find.

We hope you find this information useful in making your selection.

Questions You Should Ask When Choosing a DJ

  1. Will your disc jockey provide a written entertainment agreement?
  2. Will the actual disc jockey performing at your reception meet with you in person to help plan your reception?
  3. Does the disc jockey company have backup equipment?
  4. Are there any extra charges for what should be 'standard equipment'?
  5. What sort of equipment is used?
  6. Does the disc jockey have references they can provide?

1. Will your disc jockey provide a written entertainment agreement?

It is very important to confirm your booking in writing. Terms should be clearly defined to avoid future problems. Also, be sure that the 'Actual DJ' that will be performing at your event is clearly defined BEFORE you sign the agreement. We always offer a complementary consultation to meet our clients BEFORE we sign any agreements.

2. Will the Actual Disc Jockey performing at your reception meet with you in person to help plan your reception?

I can't stress this enough. If the DJ companies answer is: "We'll assign you a DJ a month prior to your reception" Move on to the next company. Or, better yet, get a rock solid referral from other trusted vendors or friend.

3. Does the Disc Jockey Company Have Backup Equipment?

Even the best in Pro-Audio equipment can fail. Be sure to select a Disc Jockey that has back-up Equipment On-site. Don't settle for the "We have staff at the office that is on call in case of emergencies" line. If you hear that line, (which is a crock) it's time to keep looking.

4. Are there any extra charges for what should be 'standard equipment'?

Is there an extra charge for a wireless microphone? Is there an extra charge for planning sessions or equipment set up time? Never pay extra for a wireless microphone, or set-up time. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but not many.

5. What sort of equipment is used?

Our sound systems are compact in nature and designed to provide clear, distortion-free sound. We provide all sound reinforcement equipment needed for a typical event. This system is all digital, Compact Disc. If a second ceremony/cocktail music system is required, we can provide that as well. The smaller system is equipped with wireless microphones, CD, Mini Disc & tape players. Every disc jockey company claims to have the best. I would suggest seeing pictures of different options they have.

6. Does the disc jockey have references they can provide?

If you have never seen the DJ you are considering for your event? We think that the references from other professional wedding vendors and past clients are your best bet, since they have probably seen the DJ in question on numerous occasions, and can give you a better idea on the ability of a DJ.
